SHADO's Moonbase is manned by a permanent crew of fifty highly trained and motivated young men and women who know that they are Earth's first defense against the aliens. This crew includes command staff, astronauts, technicians, tracking specialists, security personnel, and a small medical staff.
Despite an understandably high fatality rate among the astronauts and lunar module pilots, assignment to Moonbase is considered by SHADO personnel to be a highly prestigious posting. More than a few Moonbase astronauts have gone on to command positions in the Sky-Diver fleet and elsewhere.
